Anja Huwe - Xmal Deutschland

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Anja Huwe, the iconic frontwoman of post-punk pioneers Xmal Deutschland, made her mark in music history with the band's influential releases, including four albums on cult labels like 4AD. After stepping away from the spotlight to focus on a successful career in visual arts, Huwe made a triumphant return to music in early 2024 with her acclaimed solo album 'CODES', released alongside reissues of early Xmal Deutschland singles--both on Sacred Bones Records. Huwe's comeback was heralded by the global press, with outlets like The Guardian, Rolling Stone, THE WIRE, and Galore dubbing it the "comeback of the year" and heaping praise on her latest work.

This wave of critical acclaim, combined with a groundswell of fan demand, has driven Huwe to bring CODES to the stage. She will perform her new material live, alongside modern reinterpretations of Xmal Deutschland classics, with a new band lineup (to be announced soon) and visual art designed by Huwe herself. Anja Huwe's first confirmed performance will be at the Grauzone Festival in the Netherlands in February 2025 (info here), with additional shows in the UK and Europe to follow.

In conjunction with the news of the return to the stage, Huwe is releasing remixes by German band No More - well-known for their indie-classic "Suicide Commando" - of two early Xmal Deutschland singles. "Die Wolken" transforms the track into a sleek, stripped-back electro anthem, seamlessly blending post-punk's moody intensity with a sharper, dancefloor-ready edge. The track pulses with a minimalist groove, driving its hypnotic rhythm forward while retaining the dark, brooding undercurrent that defines its post-punk roots. "Schwarze Welt" takes a completely different turn, embracing a moody trip-hop rhythm that envelops the track in a hypnotic, downtempo vibe. While the original's raw punk energy is still present in the vocal delivery, it's now interwoven with ethereal, atmospheric layers brought to life by shimmering synths. This reimagined version drifts between worlds, balancing the grit of its punk origins with a more dreamlike ambient quality.
